 wasted days i can't rewind    2008-12-30 21:28:46 ET
The trip to DC was pretty great. The traffic on the turnpike on the way home was not so great, but at least it was an excuse to miss work for one more day. My cousin (who's 12) kept telling me that I'm "gonna flip" when I see the Christmas gift he got me, and it ended up being this old Polaroid folding camera from the early 70's, in its original hard leather case with the manual, a full set of flashcubes, and an unopened box of film that expired in September 1972. Pretty sweet. I just need to order a battery for it and get some fresh film from Adorama and I'm set.

This trip also reminded me how much I hate living in a 'no pets allowed' apartment. My cousins from CT brought their Westie down with him, and my cousins in DC have two more. I'm normally very much a cat person but someone in my family, for about as long as I can remember, has had a Westie, so I've always liked them a lot too. Plus they're pretty much cat-sized. Ideally one day I'll have both a cat and a Westie. Or two.

Another reminder I got from being in DC was how much I'd really like to be living alone, or at least away from home. I was in a hotel room by myself for 3 nights and just being able to piss with the door open so I could keep listening to the TV was great. The problem is that it won't be happening any time soon; I'm still working a shitty part-time job in a grocery store. Some of my friends are working awesome full-time jobs in Manhattan or Brooklyn making quite a bit more than I am and even they're still at home. I guess that's by their own choices though, since if it were me I'd probably have been out the door long ago, but who knows...

I went and bought a pair of Apple's new in-ear headphones tonight after work. Technically they were a Christmas present too; my brother was going to buy them for me but they were sold out so he got me a giftcard for the same amount as the cost of the headphones. Anyway, they're pretty damn slick. I can't say how well the noise-cancellation shit works until I'm actually outside walking around with them or on the train, but so far it seems that they do pretty well. I'm not even sure if good noise cancellation is supposed to be one of their features. Anyway, they also sound really, really good. The volume controls on the remote don't work with the iPhone but that thing has volume controls on its exterior anyway so all I cared about was the center button, and that does work.

I replied to a Craigslist ad looking for photographers for the Inauguration events next month. I think it was for photos of the crowds and spectators, not really of the parade or ceremony itself, but I'm going to be down there anyway doing the same thing so I might as well be getting paid for it.

So I'm in DC at the Georgetown Inn. It's pretty nice, though the people in the room next to mine won't shut the fuck up. If it weren't raining right now I'd probably be walking around Georgetown, but my Converse sprung leaks long ago and I can't even stand on a wet surface now without my feet getting soaked. I'll probably use some of my Xmas cash to buy a new pair tomorrow.

I kind of don't want it to snow tomorrow. Normally I'm all for snow; I like snow. But I wanted to go to Jersey tomorrow to do some more Xmas shopping. I am off from work tomorrow though, so I'm not totally against the idea of sitting home all day. I do have some movies I rented from Netflix that need to be watched.
