My beloved likes to explore outer relms of software programs. Not being fully satisfied with microsoft and not usually inclined to travel in the same direction as the mass population he has collected various other programs that more or less do the same as all microsoft products. I have no problem with this... I have a problem with Quark Press. He uses this as his word processing program. This is not a word processing program, it is designed for page layout. I wrote my four pages last night at his house due to the fact that my car is still not working and he so Lovingly makes me tea in the morning before dropping me off at school. Back to quark. My essay upon rereading this morning was very messed up. I brought a copy with me on disc and I emailed it to me from his house. I could not open the paper in any program availible to students on campus. Being in the theatre we are fortunate to have more programs than the average lab. To no avail. Luckily my professoer is willing to let me email the amended copy to him this evening after I convert it to something more useful on my loves computer. Microsoft office is going into his computer for my stay at his house. He is free to delete it after I get to go home.
Normally I wouldn't encourage conformity. There are, however, some places where the diverse world needs to coverge so that compatibility can happen. Al I wanted to do was fix my paper....

When saving things across platforms I save in RTF (rich text Format) or TXT (uhmmm text unicode 8-bit or some such)

sometimes formatting gets messed up but I'm real good with MS word so I can reformat the whole paper in a snap

It's not a reformating issue... The computer will not open either the document I recorded to cd or off of email. I think I have to copy it to wordpad or something and email it to another computer so I can fix it and send it to my professor

oh. or you could just cave in and accapt that microsofts way IS better and just buy the $150 version of office xp for students.

Or just abandon Windows based computers alltogther and accept that Mac is the way of the future.

2005-02-22 11:25:47 ET

yep. just like cobal

2005-02-22 12:10:56 ET

Abandoning microsoft has been my source of trouble. Personally I don't care what program I use, just as long as I can get the work done.

And about Mac.... Not enough of the programs I use are found for mac yet... I remain a PC user

The switch from PC to mac requires much reconsideration of software... if you really look you'll find a superior form of nearly every PC program that's mac based.

2005-02-23 04:43:00 ET

neo- can I get a superior version of halflife2 for the mac?
What about Freelancer?

2005-02-23 07:24:36 ET

You most likely cannot get those programs specifically for mac... however, you can get a similar program, (not a mac version of the PC based program) that some would argue is superior.

Here's the catch. In order to switch to Mac you have to become much more involved in your computer. Everything you know about computers must be abandoned and relearned to really appreciate the macintosh OS.
Most people aren't prepared to abandon their PC's for the fear of something new and different... but i think it's worth it. In the end it's all opinion anyways.

I used macs in my early school days and they were alright. I CAN use them but the bottom line is I just don't think they're flexible enough for me.

If I have to special order software that I need NOW and wait a week for it thats no good for me.

2005-02-23 07:44:03 ET

Well, if you're established with what you've got, all you can do is let it ride... (but let me assure you, Macs have come a LONG way in the last couple of years)

2005-02-23 07:51:55 ET

indeed they have. just not in the areas I would ever be using them for hehe

2005-02-23 07:53:39 ET

Yeah, they don't make good three-person slingshot ammo like PC's do.

2005-02-23 08:01:20 ET

or paperweights. those damn sleek plastic cases are too light.

2005-02-23 09:07:08 ET

How about http://www.openoffice.org/ ?

2005-02-23 12:57:52 ET

Thanks for the link. essay was fixed at home and transfered onto another program and then emailed to professor.

as to the mac question. When mac has software that will let me render in 3D and talk to a number of specialized light control boards and programs then maybe I will look into transfering...

2005-02-24 04:14:45 ET

all platforms allow you to render in 3d. Especially Macs.

and by light control boards do you mean for like, stage lights?

2005-02-25 07:21:00 ET

too true sonik.

I work part time as a stage lighting assistant... we use exclusively Mac software.

2005-02-25 11:00:43 ET

The programs that I use don't come in mac as far as I know... And yes I know mac has 3D rendering programs but the ones I own I have for PC and I am not ready to fork out the amount it would cost to do a full switch over...

2005-02-25 11:27:04 ET

that's the main problem... people stuck with inferior products because they were suckered in to using PC the first time around. You have my most heartfelt condolences.
