So I'm bitchy and VERY emotional when I'm on the rag. Like, crying at country songs, love songs, commercials, ANYTHING.
I feel sorry for my hubby but he is so good to me through it all.
Anyway, this was such a long week. I had parent-teacher conferences everyday this week. Thankfully, they were great. Parents are so funny. They are either really concerned about every little detail about their child's behavior or they don't care at all. I actually enjoyed talking to all of them. And this is a huge relief as these were the last big things I had this school year.
Thank God for homemade margaritas and my baby.

Mike went fishing and brought home all the extra minnows to feed to Buster. That blood-thirsty maniac has eaten like 10 already. He is gorging himself on fish. Bleellehhchch. I really love(d?) our pet turtle but this is too much. :(

| rant 2008-04-24 23:16:15 ET |
|
***Disclaimer...I didn't research this first-hand (recently.) This is what I learned from my way-too-f-ing-expensive college where I got my teaching degree. And what I have gathered from talking to educators across the country, including TX.***
This country is f-ed up. I'm sure we all realize that on many levels. From the mortgage crisis, to gas prices, etc, etc.
This rant is about how we are SCREWING UP our children.
Thank you, No Child Left Behind, aka the government. Here's the thing. American students were behind other countries' students in test scores. To fix that problem, our government pulled all its fancy lawmakers together to fix this problem. They came up with the biggest incentive ever: money. To figure out who gets the money, they made more tests. Now every school is held accountable for their learning. Great. In theory. The two main problems I have with this:
1) This was modeled after the Texas school system. Um hello. Texas public schools scores suck. Is this the example we want to hold the country to?
2) NCLB was created by lawmakers. Politicians, lobbyists, lawyers. Never mind what the research says about how children learn and develop. Never mind what is best for kids. Never mind what people who work with children on a daily basis believe affect testing. Never mind that teachers are forced to teach to a test. Which means instead of teaching in order to educate children, we are forced to teach so we don't lose our jobs b/c test scores are low.
I realize this does not directly affect me. (Currently.) Because I am teaching preschool. Here's the deal: tonight I was out with my hubby at a church dinner thing. We met a lady with a 5 year old daughter. I mentioned what I do and she started talking about the stresses of parenthood. This is what kills me: "Kids are expected to know how to read BEFORE kindergarten." It's true. Schools are freaking out, trying to get the test scores higher. So, kids have to "work harder." So each grade becomes more difficult, until finally, kids should read before kindergarten.
I'm not even going to go into the brain research that states how this is detrimental to the natural processes kids have to go through. Or how the more we confine children to desks and sitting quietly at the age of 4 or 5 affects the childhood obesity rates. Or how PLAY, unstructured play, is the NUMBER ONE way children learn.
I just want to stand up for the little ones and demand a change. When can they be kids? When can they run and yell and play in the dirt? How will they learn to relate to others? Share? Take turns? Feel compassion? Strengthen their muscles? Lemme tell you, it doesn't happen sitting in a desk, at a table, or even quietly. At all.
I could go on and on, I have so much anger and frustration about this sick cycle of competition and greed. One more parting comment:
Those countries that are so far ahead of the U.S. in test scores?? Most of them don't teach children to read until first or second grade. At the earliest.

| Pole Dancing 2008-04-19 22:42:28 ET |
|
So my best friend's bachelorette party was last night.
One of her dreams in life was to learn how to pole dance and so we went to
this place called "Miss Pole" where they have pole dancing and strip tease classes.
It was really fun although I will not be quitting my job to become a pole dancer because I sucked at it. It didn't help that all the other girls with me were super skinny. The instructor was an intresting woman. She was flew around the pole and whatnot. Never seen pole dancers before so it was interesting to see. Apparently you can even buy portable poles for like $350. I'd have to get alot better for it to be worth it for us. :)
Lemme tell ya, it was a freakin' workout. She told us, "This is going to kick your butts." And today we are all REALLY REALLY sore. We also learn some lap dancing techniques, and those are already paying off. ;)
The rest of the bachelorette party was really fun. We went to Mexican food place and drank super strong margaritas. My best friend is a major light weight and was gone after half of hers. Then we went out to a club, and got in free because we were a bachelorette party. It was fun to dance with the girls, but I guess being an old married woman, I get sick of that scene quickly. I hate how guys act when you go out like that. I guess it's just the difference between boys and girls. *rolls eyes* I know some girls are out there to find a guy and get laid, but I have gone out with so many girls that just want to dance and have fun. ALL guys that are there to get laid. There's my rant for the day. Now I need to go relax. Doing all those moves really takes it out of ya. Ha!

| First Interview 2008-04-17 20:35:48 ET |
|
GGGahhahhhahah!! I just got done with my first interview.
This would be my FIRST choice of a job(second grade teacher), so that made me so nervous. And it was over the phone, which sucked. It's so hard to not be a doofus while being interviewed on the phone.
I feel like I answered the questions well, but I kept talking about being a freakin' PRESCHOOL teacher. I hope they don't write me off becuase of that. grrrrr. Maybe they'll just see that as my experiences. *prays*
I'm also bummed...they said it would be 2 or 3 weeks until I found out. bah
Next interview:
-Tuesday night (for a preschool job, faaaar away from Mike's school)
