"All I gotta do is close my eyes and it all goes away." - Kerouac

When I said that ain't my style
I only waited for awhile.
When it finally came along...
I closed my eyes and it was gone.
So feel free, go steal and rob;
revolution ain't my job.
and if I sing your happy song
please don't tell me I am wrong

close my eyes and I am gone...
if I stare at the sun, I find there's only one,
close my eyes and I am gone...

so when I said that it was you
you know I meant it from the heart
such a shame that when you're through
they'll say you didn't even start
so I says I like your smile
I only sawrit for awhile
and though you swore it would stay long,
I close my eyes and it is gone.

close my eyes and I am gone...
if I stare at the sun, I find there's only one,
close my eyes and I am gone.

So on the day when I collide
is on the fateful day I ride
pray I somehow slip away
and slip into another day

close my eyes and I am gone
I close my eyes and I am gone
if I stare at the sun, I find there's only one,
close my eyes and I am gone.
well, if I stare at the sun, I find there's only one,
close my eyes and I am gone.
and if I stare at the sun, I find I've just begun.
I close my eyes and I am gone...
I close my eyes and I am gone...

So, that's what that song is about...

You know? I've always thought it was about the transitory nature of life.
But yes, that's where the line comes from.
It's listed in the liner notes -

"Today his mind is perplexed and he looks into the perfect cloudless empty blue and wonders what all the Bruiting and furore is below, what all the yelling, the buildings, the humanity, the concern - 'Maybe there's nothing at all,' he devines in his lucid pureness - 'Just like the smoke that comes out of papa's pipe.' - 'the picture that the smoke makes' - all I gotta do is close my eyes and it all goes away.'"
- Jack Kerouac, Visions of Gerard
