please, please explain this to me...

while piddling around lj i came across a comment made in a community in reference to the persons favorite bands- "gawwd your favorite bands are so mainstream"
after that point i collapsed in a fit of laughter.
i mean, somebody must listen to mainstream music or else*gasp* it wouldn't be mainstream now would it?
a person's favorite bands are just a preference, correct? liking music is only but an interest that many many people happen to share. for some people it's just a certain radio station they listen to and a couple cds they own, but for others it's a way of life or a job, many even take pride in finding that awesome new band that nobody has ever heard of.
my mother, makes another great example- she couldn't name 3 bands off the top of her head and doesn't even listen to the radio.
i guess my point here is that there is no point in criticising someone on their choice of music unless you are going to criticise them on their sexual preference, the way they dress themselves, the activities they enjoy doing, etc...

OMG you like to read, play sports, and hang out with your friends?! THAT IS SOOO MAINSTREAM! i sooo totally won't talk to you. ever. you disgust me. get out of my sight before i vomit.

Certainly people try to ostracise themselves into as much of a minority as they can in order to define their personal value, and some pitiful bastards do this by trying to be ultra-scene and ultra-obscure.

This psychology is not unknown to marketing and demographics companies, they know how to diversify their investments into sub-mainstream return channels.

one of the most brilliant streams of conciousness i've read in a while.

thank you for the laugh.
=)
seriously.

on another note. 2 summers ago I worked for one of the last locally owned big budget "non-mainstream" radio stations i know to be in existence.
my whole job was just to listen to soo much music and scour the net and esspecially the local "scene's" sooo much that i would thus know about all the best, coolest "undiscovered" bands which they could unleash on the masses.
it was an eye opeing experience to be sure.
esspecially because i got to do this right out of high school.
but it was fun.

and as a result. i am SO much more hardcore than ALL of you [/dripping sarcasm]

i'm glad to be of service. hah

what an awesome job! i would love to really get into the local scene and go see all the bands that play in random bars and at house parties, etc. I just don't have the time. :(
so yes...you are so much more hardcore than i.
ooo what ever shall i do? my happy and peaceful life has now been so uprooted I think I must stay home and ponder my very existence, teary-eyed and depressed. >_< hah
