>review this book is a great introduction to zen thoughts and idea's from a very japanese mind set, but translated superbly by the author it isn't a study per say but more like frank discussions on the subject of zen by both sects the Soto and Rinzai....it has a great chapter on the original face and the song of mediation...

Nine-Headed Dargon River, by Peter Matthiessen,on Shambhala Publications, INC. (distributed by random house so its much easier to find, shambhala is a very reputable company in the zen community) http://www.shambhala.com ....headquartered in boston...

>review the author takes the reader along with him through his introduction to zen, and his travels and wrestlings with it, its a great read that carrys the sentiment of american zen and expresses well the concepts, includes much history and lots of important details on zen over the last 14 centurys....

there are lots of other great books i could recommend but these are the best of the places to start...
