apple's polishing cloth is absolutely worth $19.

the cheaper microfiber cloths i've been using prior to this are absolute shit in comparison.

not kidding.

uh huh. this is why i added the "not kidding" bit at the end.

i didn't really understand the internet hullabaloo over the price anyway, given plenty of other professional cleaning cloths in the automotive and jewelry industry go for easily this much or more. some people just love to make fun of apple for any reason they can find.

at any rate, my macbook gets tossed around a lot, regularly ends up smudged, and as a visual designer this always bugs me. the 4 pack of microfiber cloths that i have been using for years never did a particularly great job, though it was better than nothing.

been attempting to finish up a lagging creative project lately and trying to find ways to be less annoyed by little things in the process - so the other day on my way to one of my go-to freelance "office" spaces (the starbucks at lucasfilm) i stopped at the apple store and grabbed one of these things.

it's literally the best fucking cleaning cloth i've ever used, and puts everything else i've bought for this purpose, including the microfiber cloths i have been using, to absolute shame. i'm not even sure what it's made of cause it's quite unlike any other microfiber cloth or any other sort of wipe i've ever used, but it sure as shit is worth $19, which is still a dollar less than i paid for my previous "high end" 4 pack of microfiber wipes that collectively aren't anywhere near as good.

of course i'm sure most people aren't as OCD as i am when it comes to this shit - any tiny blemish on my screen is a tedious thing that's in the way when i'm working - but anyway, yeah, this cloth is fucking great and i'm glad i bought it. it has fully exceeded all my known experience in what a dry cleaning wipe is capable of doing. hell, it does a better job than a lot of electronics cleaning chemical solutions i've tried over the years as well. dunno what the fuck it's made out of, but whatever it is is definitely worth $19.

take that, internet.

I recently bought an iphone for longer security updates (Iphones do about 5 years and droids do about 3). It's def a nicer phone but I don't use my smartphone like most people. It's built nice but the UI, for me, is more frustrating but I get why people enjoy them.

Honestly, $19 for a cleaning cloth for a monitor that's 2k+ with the stand isn't that unreasonable. If you're willing to spend that much, then it shouldn't really be an issue.

i hear you. i think some of that just comes down to what you're used to vs learning curve. also it's been my experience that full OS updates on iphones typically stay supported anywhere from 7 to nearly 10 years. and security updates even longer than that, since apple releases current security updates even for older versions of iOS. my kid's old 5s still gets them.

for me i've used both android and iOS enough to know i just prefer the latter overall, and i have a lot of respect for apple caring a hell of a lot more about end-user privacy and all that. plus SMS messages are awful. imessage is so much better. also, fun fact - imessage has long been made open by apple for any platform to use, but google / android still refuses to support it natively anyway because imessage is encrypted and google can't read and datamine them like they can with SMS 🙄

but anyway, yeah, i dunno, regarding the polishing cloth i just know it works better than any other wipe i've used over the years, and i've tried a lot of them.

See loads of people using old phones. I can't get away from SMS most of the time. I've been enjoying Signal these days but that's just because it cross platform and I can use it on my laptop so I don't have to look at my phone.

I'm glad you like the cloth. It's going to last forever. I just use the free ones I get with my glasses but I'm almost never cleaning screens.
