Ok here I am.

i still can't be arsed to make a proper explanation (cause you're not paying me to) so here's my TL;DR lazy version (which doesn't apply to you since you're just an individual user who doesn't know any better and is clearly just using WP for something quite simple)

wordpress is shit. it's an outdated dinosaur of a platform (no one else uses PHP anymore, especially since HTML5 has existed since 2008). WP is clunky, loads poorly for any sort of application that isn't *super* minimal, hasn't had its security protocols updated since 2003 (and won't ever, cause no one fucking uses PHP anymore) so it's also super easy to hack.

it's a massive time-sink to do anything in, it's massively limited in what you can do on top of this. basically it's outdated, bloated, overly-clunky shit that no one in their right minds (who knows better) should be using, especially in 2022. unless you're still someone who just wants a blog and doesn't care if you get hacked or if it takes 4x as much time to customize as anything else.

the cult part comes from the fact that there are still whole ass companies who base their ENTIRE existence around wordpress development and wordpress dependency. for zero fucking good reason, when there are a whole ass litany of reasons NOT to be doing this, as of 10+ years ago.

the community that still continues to insist on using wordpress despite SO MANY BETTER / SAFER OPTIONS now existing are mostly just neckbeard fuckrocks from the 90s who, no matter how many times you lay out the very valid reasons for why they should probably use literally anything else in this day and age, just default back to a mind-numbing response of "well yeah but we still use wordpress for reasons. <insert endless mental gymnastics here.>"

in sum: wordpress (at least the wordpress community that still insists on keeping its corpse afloat, and using or recommending its use in any sort of "professional" capacity) is a goddamned cult.

THANK YOU HAVE A NICE DAY.

it's like "hey man yeah we know, like, modern operating systems exist... BUT HAVE YOU SEEN WHAT YOU CAN DO THESE DAYS WITH WINDOWS 3.1 IF YOU JUST ATTACH 543 & 1/2 PLUGINS THAT BREAK ALL THE TIME ONTO IT, ATTACH IT TO 4 GASOLINE ENGINES (ONE OF WHICH MISFIRES A LOT), AND THEN PRAY TO GOD 5 TIMES EVERY 10 MINUTES?!?!? IT'S GREAT IT'S THE BEST! THAT'S WHY WE STILL USE WINDOWS 3.1 AND IF YOU DON'T YOU'RE WRONG! FREEDOM! OPEN SOURCE!!!1"

Do you have a preferred alternative?

I used WP for my crappy website because we had to in school and I just kept it.

2022-12-14 23:30:21 ET

well, in the case of a simple book website it's probably fine. but if you want it more future-proofed, i dunno, there are a ton of HTML5 platforms to build stuff on these days. i use wix for most of my stuff, just cause i find it to have the most bang-for-buck in terms of the freedom it affords me from a design standpoint. but there's stuff that's easier to use if you're not a designer too (albeit more limiting), like squarespace.

i would probably just look at one of those.

I like wix
