just in case you were wondering,

seagate has the absolute worst customer support i've ever dealt with in all my life.

you know, not that i didn't want to waste a whole work day + the previous evening trying to exchange a still-under-warranty external harddrive that started malfunctioning within 3 months of purchase, and have my bank account charged 6 times for one replacement order thanks to their stupid AuToMaTeD system that is completely broken.

the tech industry is run by fucking asshats.

Rough. I stay away from anything other than Western Digital and Samsung higher-end models. You still don't have the choice if it comes in a prepackaged deal.

yeah i definitely don't plan on buying anything else from seagate after this, with i guess the exception of xbox storage since i'm still not sure that anyone else makes "officially licensed" external drives for that.

i think apple sells lacie drives that they cover with their own warranty as well, so in the future i may just opt for those. i've never had any issues with WD or samsung myself, either, just haven't purchased anything from either in a long time.

Fair. Make sure you look at reviews of the WD drives. Some of them are not great.

a week later and:

• there are still 6 charges for this one order stuck pending in my bank account.

• they've lost the order number they gave me again, with zero confirmation email or explanation.

• needless to say, still no harddrive in the mail - "2 business day expedited" my ass

• i'm currently waiting yet again to speak with a "supervisor" and at this point in hopes that at this point i can just get them to refund all these charges immediately and send me the replacement drive in 2 days for free seeing how they have so completely and abysmally dropped the ball.

...huge chunks of work time utterly lost on this this past week, and STILL waiting for a resolution. fuck seagate forever at this point. lol

Where in the heck did you get this from? That's terrible service...

well i got it from amazon, but since it died outside of amazon's normal return window, this has all been me just dealing with seagate directly. and, yes, if it wasn't seagate's verified support chat, i would think i was dealing with a fucking 3rd world scam ring. it's the worst experience i've ever had.

yesterday i finally got a supervisor's supervisor to refund the charges to my account, and since seagate was so awful i just decided to call amazon and explain the situation to them and how impossible it was becoming to get a warranty replacement for this thing - so amazon made an exception for me and just refunded the purchase price even if it's out of their normal return window.

seriously, never buying a seagate product again after this.

This feels like it should be one of the worst seagate stories but it's probably no where close.

looking up their customer service ratings and reviews online, it seems about par for the course. pretty awful.

hey, so thanks for reminding me that western digital exists. i just got one of their passport portable drives from their amazon store, and already tested out their <gasp> ACTUAL PHONE SUPPORT department with some questions before ordering and they were super easy to deal with. already feel way better about this purchase than the last one. will likely end up replacing my other seagate drive (that still works but whatever) with a WD one in the near future as well. WD's stuff is like 10-20 bucks cheaper than seagate too, and has better reviews. go figure, man.

That's awesome! I've had such good luck with them. I bought their NAS drive for long term storage of things I really don't want to lose.
