fun fact: every xbox from the xbox one s (which is the one i still have) onward are designed by a designer who works at apple. this explains why the xbox magically went from basically the fugliest, most clunky looking console ever with the OG xbox one to, at least once the xbox s / x showed up, one of the most pleasant looking consoles from a pure hardware design standpoint. microsoft had a rare moment of self reflection and remembered they suck ass at hardware design so they contracted out an apple guy to fix that problem for them, thusly every console they've released since the xbox one s has looked quite nice aesthetically.
also my #1 selling point on 'modern' gaming consoles is backwards compatibility, period. so i went from a hacked wii and 1st-run ps3 the previous gen (the one that could still play ps1, ps2, and ps3 games natively) to the xbox one s after sony made it apparent with the ps4 that they suddenly gave zero shits about back combat whatsoever, and xbox suddenly gave all the shits about it. also game pass was legitimately awesome up until recently when microsoft has entered yet another one of its "we're-going-to-perpetually-do-impressively-stupid-and-up-our-own-ass-things-that-would-tank-us-as-a-company-if-we-weren't-so-insanely-huge-and-have-endless-coffers-of-money-so-haha-fuck-you" phases.
on that note, the current gens of all consoles i can't be arsed about either way. i may eventually maybe get a ps5 solely for gran turismo, but that'll be once i actually have money to spend again cause i prefer playing that series with a proper sim racing setup. forza tries but it's never quite as good as GT. but whatever.
oh also the N64 is and still remains my favorite console of all time and xbox consoles have the most N64 rereleases / remakes on them, mostly thanks to microsoft continuing to own what's left of rare on top of the stuff companies like night dive plop onto every console including xbox already.
but yeah honestly everything current gen just holds almost zero interest to me. the last console i got was a fuckin wii u which also can do a hell of a lot if you hack the thing. that sort of thing holds more interest to me than newer stuff anymore. one of these days i gotta get around to "bad updating" my xbox 360 too so i can use that to play all OG xbox titles beyond just the ones microsoft decided it was ok to allow me to play on it.
as an aside, i'll just state that occasionally microsoft does do a few things that, at the very least, have measurably less suck than their competition. windows on an actual PC is still a total dumpster fire i have no desire to touch with a ten foot pole, but the last couple generations of the xbox i like just fine, and bing is still what i use most often as a search engine (though search in general has become a real "pick your poison" proposition these days) |
