What every punk rock girl wants to hear... | |
2004-09-28 02:50:29 ET It was a toss up today of what lyrics I wanted to post. But I decided on these b/c they ring so true in the heart of almost every punk rock girl I know. She's A Rebel ~ GreenDay "She's a rebel She's a saint She's salt of the earth And she's dangerous She's a rebel Vigilante Missing link on the brink Of destruction From Chicago to Toronto She's the one that they Call old whatsername She's the symbol of resistance and she's holding on my heart like a hand grenade is she dreaming what I'm thinking is she the mother of all bombs gonna detonate is she trouble like I'm trouble make it a double twist of fate or a melody that sings the revolution the dawning of our lives she brings the liberation that I just cant define nothing comes to mind She's a rebel She's a saint She's salt of the earth And she's dangerous She's a rebel Vigilante Missing link on the brink Of destruction She's a rebel, She's a rebel, She's a rebel, And she's dangerous She's a rebel, She's a rebel, She's a rebel, And she's dangerous" |
2004-09-26 07:20:09 ET I was reading back through some old, old archives and the following anecdote amused me, so I thought I'd share. "The Cali-punk explosion which brought bands like Offspring to the fore has now been overtaken by a newfangled ska interest, with teens trading their fat pants for drainpipe trousers. But Green Day, who have just released a return-to-form LP called (characteristically, again) Nimrod, have stuck. And they'll probably stick for a while, because perfect two minute/three chord aggro-pop songs of dweeby self-deprecation and snotty puppy love will always have a place in the sun, no matter which way the winds of change are blowing." http://www.montrealmirror.com/ARCHIVES/1997/111397/music4.html Then came... "Rancid were now a very bankable attraction for a band whose visual image had never strayed from bondage trousers and mohawks. They returned to the studio after touring in March 1995, with ... And Out Come The Wolves the result. Returning to a punk/ska sound reminiscent of Operation Ivy at their peak and the Clash by their third album, as ever, the lyrics were written from earthy personal experience. Once again, it was a major seller, featuring the two radio hits, "Time Bomb" and "Ruby Soho'. The ska theme continued on 1998"s Life Won't Wait, with two tracks recorded in Jamaica. The album featured a collaboration with Mighty Mighty Bosstones vocalist Dicky Barrett on "Cash, Culture And Violence". http://music.lycos.com/artist/bio.asp?QT=A&QW=Rancid&AN=Rancid&MID=62752&MH= And I asked myself, how the hell did I miss that? Was I in a coma? I thought I read the liner notes...Well, shit.

2004-09-24 10:26:31 ET It doesn't all rhyme (and sometimes the rhymes are terrible) and I lost the rhythm in some places. But I don't give a shit and neither should you. PUnk ROck ANthem ~ by "me" I know my best friend would understand, if she were only here. She would offer me a cigarette, and pour me another beer. I'm sure that a punk rock anthem would ring clear through the night while she held my hand and kept watch through the long, hard night. I know that she would empathize when I try to explain the situation I'm in she's been there and done that and knows how everything can look so damn grim. She would tell me that I need another coat of eyeliner and my t-shirt isn't tight enough She'd tell me not to walk away but party while you're young. She'd know that you can miss someone even when you speak and knowing someone's out there isn't enough to mend the breach. She'd know about the hefty sighs and late night tears in bed She'd know about all these things even though they never left my head. With one look she'd know all the troubles and the trials and she'd soothe the cracks upon my heart with beer and smoke and smiles. ********************************************************** Southernmost ~ The Lucksmiths "Weekends away: These were the happiest days Ill with the thrill of the chase They’d take a train Take off Friday for the coast In summer they’d go southernmost Where the sky was swimming-pool blue And the swimming pool was too And every single weekend They’d dive in at the deep end And come Monday morning His skin still smelled like chlorine Remember when forever seemed just fine? Seen through glasses of rose coloured wine They’d sit up all night talking Now she’s sound asleep to the sound of his walkman And every single weekend The divide between them deepens A curse across the kitchen He might still be within spitting distance But there’s only one way to find out... Take heart Take a train to the coast Take heart Take a train southernmost Take heart"

2004-09-23 02:08:53 ET Sunday Malady ~ Vic Ruggiero "I think we have gone too far and now we just cannot go home as way this leads upon two-way on this fine and winding road and so we must take some time in order to reflect and unwind to wonder and contemplate the values of a simpler time Sunday Malady, a thoughtless sea for you and I, so why haven't we a cup of tea before we die? I wish we could drive all night if only so we could find a way in which with this wedding night somehow cut this wedding cake and so Insanity, I discreetly ask you why Sunday Malady can put a thorn-bush there in your eye I loved you with all my heart and if that makes it more of a sin that we should have need to part either above or then within Sunday Malady, A thoughtless "C" 4 U & I, so why haven't we a cup of tea before we die? Sunday Malady a boston cream for you and I so why haven't we a cup of tea before we die?" |
Today's Predictions | |
2004-09-22 02:24:41 ET My horoscope today says thus: "The Sun enters Libra, sign of relationships and social grace. Now is time to buy art and beautify your surroundings. If searching for a soulmate, the next four weeks are the best time to spot your future mate, so look your best in order to be spotted." I find that wickedly ironic and just a little bit sad.

2004-09-17 10:39:04 ET Movies/DVD's I wish to see... Richard Linklater's Slacker(1991) Paul Annett's Tales of the Unexpected(1979 - 1988) Saw We Don't Live Here Anymore The Forgotten And without doubt, I'm actually drooling over: Jeff Balsmeyer's Danny Deckchair (2003). I can't believe I missed it! I'm on a mission now to find it. Anyone know where I can score a copy? It's already been released in the UK...(but then, what else is new?) and in NYC and LA in August... http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/danny_deckchair/about.php http://www.dannydeckchairmovie.com/# (Official site) Those of you who know the indie scene will recognize the plot immediately. The Lucksmiths released a 1997 album, "A Good Kind Of Nervous" with track #9 (I think) entitled "Up." And, while they may not be _directly_ connected...It's still enough to raise an eyebrow... |

2004-09-08 09:51:54 ET "Heaven Bend to take my hand And lead me through the fire Be the long awaited answer To a long and painful fight Truth be told I tried my best But somewhere long the way I got caught up in all there was to offer But the cost was so much more than I could bear Though I've tried I've fallen I have sunk so low I messed up Better I should know So don't come round here and Tell me I told you so We all begin out with good intent When love is raw and young We believe that we can change ourselves The past can be undone But we carry on our back the burdens time always reveals In the lonely light of morning In the wound that would not heal It's the bitter taste of losing everything I've held so dear Though I've tried I've fallen I have sunk so low I messed up Better I should know So don't come round here and Tell me I told you so Heaven bend to take my hand I've nowhere left to turn I'm lost to these I thought were friends To everyone I know Oh they turn their heads embarrassed Pretend that they don't see That it's one wrong step one slip before you know it And there doesn't seem away to be redeemed Though I've tried I've fallen I have sunk so low I messed up Better I should know So don't come round here and Tell me I told you so I messed up Better I should know So don't come round here and Tell me I told you so" ~ Sarah McLachlan |

Good morning. | |
2004-09-02 01:59:35 ET Perhaps it's just my tooth-rottingly sweet state of mind lately, but I heard these songs on the radio this morning and just had to sing along...At the top of my lungs, in the car, while supposed to be paying attention. I couldn't help it. They may me smile...They're so sticky-sweet romantic. Angel Eyes - Jeff Healy Band This Magic Moment - Lou Reed Happy Together - The Turtles These three songs, saw my way into the parking lot at 6:45AM...I love morning radio. Sets the mood, you know? Now, I love everybody for the day.

With A New Ear | |
2004-09-01 11:10:06 ET So, I'm back in a Lucksmiths state of mind. This morning, as I was dressing to come to work (at 6:00AM - gasp!) I was listening to "Why Doesn't That Surprise Me" songs. It's been a while since I'd bother to dust that one off. It's not even a complete album, but, I digress. Anyhooo, as all things do, it eventually neared the end and Whalla! It was as if I'd heard this song for the very first time...(I love when that happens, when all of a sudden, you just "get it" and it all makes sense. Or, perhaps it's more of a personal connection...whatever.) So, I thought I'd share. Enjoy! Self-Preservation ~ The Lucksmiths "Breakfast, sat on a Japanese mattress Getting this happy takes practice The world would be duller without us Blacklist anyone who tries to attack this They can say what they like but the fact is They know nothing about us And, yeah, we're a mess But let me just stress That we're both at our best in a tight spot And whatever comes next If we leave the nest Don't settle for less than what we've got Dive in: the summer is good to be alive in Your boat was a long time arriving And it's been a while since I kissed you Timing: the temperature's high and it's climbing How did I find the bind I'm in? You haven't gone but I miss you And, yeah, we're a mess But let me just stress That we're both at our best in a tight spot And whatever comes next If we leave the nest Don't settle for less than what we've got And right, here's what's left And we've worked with less I just don't get where the lines stop Keep your cards pressed up close to your chest And they'll never guess the hand we've got Blacklist anyone who tries to attack this They can say what they like but the fact is They know nothing about us" |

2004-08-26 08:40:51 ET Haiku: Creaking screen door opens wide shatters the still night She needed him more than words. Pressing the Limits: A woman alone screen door slams in her wake skin glistens in the heat eyes searching the lane beyond the white picket fence, closed and enyielding determination sets her face as flint Failed crops wave in the sickly heat despite years of tenderness. Gate, a few steps too far for wearied feet, mocks with its rusty voice while swinging in the hot breeze.
